Pro-Obama Jewish Groups Soliciting Creepy "Pledges" To Help Obama Detonate The US-Israel Alliance
When Stephen Walt sketched out his eight-point plan for detonating the US-Israel relationship - a plan that the White House has been following almost to the letter - he advised holding off on cutting aid. Many American Jews still don't understand why the US should be "even-handed" between a besieged pro-American democracy and the people who danced in the streets after 9/11. They're still inclined to push back against open anti-Israel moves in Congress. So better to wait, Walt implied, until pro-Obama Jewish groups move other American Jews in an anti-Israel direction.
Cue this new campaign by Brit Tzedek v'Shalom, one of the many interchangable activist groups coordinating to create the impression of a broad buildup of anti-Israel sentiment. I've now gotten this spam twice in two days, courtesy of Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz. They've been sending it out with the subject "Do you stand with President Obama?" - a nice, kind of thuggish strand that gets more pointed the longer you follow along:

I especially like the bottom part about how being anti-Israel is actually the most pro-Israel position you can take. It's become quite the consistent trope in this genre. I'm almost going to miss it when these tools switch from "we're pro-Israel" to "it's Israel's fault that we reluctantly have to be anti-Israel."
Anyway, if you click on "Sign The Pledge" you commit the following to Dear Leader:
* to back your committed and persistent leadership in support of a negotiated two-state solution
* to work within my communities to build the political will that will enable you to take decisive and bold steps -- and to urge Congress to support you in this endeavor
* to make it known that an American President who dedicates himself to establishing a durable Israeli-Palestinian peace acts in the best interests of Israelis, Palestinians, the United States and our allies
* to support you in staying the course through difficult times and to celebrate your successes.
The line about fighting back against Congressmen and women who don't want to detonate the US-Israel alliance is predictable. But it's the "back your leadership" and "celebrate your successes" pledges that give it that creepy, searching-for-a-father-figure edge.
