Well, you know, I've been very clear on this, Katie, that until January 20th we have one president at a time and that's George Bush. But, we are gonna start on day one. Hillary Clinton, in her testimony during her confirmation hearing, expressed my views and the views of the administration that we can't delay. We can't kick the can down the road. We're gonna have to take a regional approach. We're gonna have to involve Syria in discussions. We're gonna have to engage Iran in ways that we have not before. We've gotta have a clear bottom line that Israel's security is paramount. But that also we have to create a two-state solution where people can live side by side in peace.

Actually trying to bring Syria into the anti-Iranian Sunni camp is the exact opposite of rational, ignoring as it does decades of Arab geopolitics and the contemporary links between political Islam and Arab nationalism.

But it's nice to see that there's at least one campaign promise that Obama's committed to fulfilling. No focus on capturing Bin Laden. Foot-dragging on Gitmo and gay rights. Even the condescending ethos of the campaign - the "reality based" talking points about competence as a criteria for leadership - has been abandoned.

But reaching out to some of the world's most inveterate anti-Semitic lunatics? That's such a good idea we should literally do it twice!

At least Obama's longtime anti-Israel adviser Robert Malley will have something to do. Think of this as a part of Obama's stimulus package - a kind of diplomatic WPA that has the incidental and unfortunate side effect of appeasing genocidal fanatics.
