Confirmed: Plurality Of Democrats Oppose Israeli Self-Defense, US Support Of Israel

Idiot

The most shocking poll since last week's one from Rasmussen that said the exact same thing. Apparently polling companies are now sending out regular reminders that American Jews have the collective political acumen of brain damaged gerbils:

There are sizable partisan differences in opinions about the Gaza conflict and in overall support for Israel. By nearly three-to-one (55% to 20%), Republicans approve of the military action Israel has taken in the Gaza Strip. Independents, by a smaller margin (44% to 29%), also approve of Israel's actions. However, a plurality of Democrats (45%) disapproves of Israel's military campaign, while just 29% express a positive opinion... A majority of Republicans (56%) say that the United States should publicly support Israel, compared with 37% of independents and 34% of Democrats. The plurality view among independents and Democrats, shared by roughly four-in-ten in each group (42% of independents, 40% of Democrats) is that the United States should say or do nothing in this conflict.

Liberal Jews are currently fighting over whether it's OK to support Israel's battle against genocidal anti-Jewish lunatics. You'd think this would be a non-issue on account of how it's a battle against genocidal anti-Jewish lunatics. But the imbeciles at J-Street beg to differ:

American Jews are divided over the Israeli military offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip, which is being vigorously denounced by an increasingly active progressive Jewish movement. The war has sown divisions among Jews here, according to Ori Nir, spokesman for the US branch of the Israeli pacifist movement "Peace Now," long overshadowed by the America-Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC)... However, their criticism made its way to the heart of the US Jewish community and a progressive Jewish organization, J Street, was established several months ago to defend the goals of pacifist Jews before the US Congress. J Street circulated a petition calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip just days after Israel's December 27 launch of massive air strikes... "We reiterate that J Street is deeply committed to Israel, its security and the safety of its citizens," the group's director Jeremy Ben-Ami said on the J Street website. "However, as Americans and as friends and supporters of Israel, we do not believe the continuation of the present military operation is in the best interests of either the United States or Israel," he added.

Because these morons obviously know what's in the "best interests of Israel." Not the Israeli defense establishment. Not the Israeli government. Certainly not the Israeli people, who support Cast Lead by eye-popping margins. These guys. So obnoxious and stupid is that statement that even ultra-liberal Reform rabbis are calling it out for being obnoxious and stupid.

Listen. Obviously American Jews are as entitled to be as idiotic as anybody else. And they're equally entitled to debate whether their religious beliefs justify that idiocy. But to claim that their positions are somehow "pro-Israel" - or that Democrats as a whole "support" Israel - is just a straightforward abuse of how language works. (h/t: MR reader EN)
