Watchers Council Results - Could It Possibly Be That Operation Cast Lead Is Justified?

War Crimes Against Sderot

As of this morning I'm a full week behind. Again. Nonetheless last week's winners are worth calling to your attention. The posts from Council runner-up The Razor and non-Council winner David Keyes both focused on the constant shelling of Sderot - the often daily war crimes that Hamas has been committing for years:

While the newspapers and airwaves are filled with pictures of Palestinian killed or wounded by Israel thanks to careful manipulation by Hamas, the European and American press ignore the Israeli victims that are behind the Israeli attacks. This fits "the narrative" that Israel is an apartheid, terrorist state while the Arabs are the oppressed, allowing the terrorists to use the consciences of Jews, Europeans and Americans as cover for their killing spree. Since 2000 Islamic terror groups have launched 10,046 rockets and mortars at Israel, most falling within a 20 km band from Gaza. Of these, terror groups launched 7,000 after Israel quit the Gaza Strip in 2005. The attacks killed or wounded nearly 300 Israelis (est), a ratio of roughly 35 missiles for each Israeli casualty.

The Razor's post has a couple of maps that provide a badly-needed demographic perspective on Hamas's shelling of Israeli civilian centers. The non-council runner-up was an article by Melanie Philips, describing the incredible hoops that the international community will jump through to deny the full scope and impact of Hamas's war crimes against Israeli and Palestinian civilians. Probably just an innocent mistake. But as long as the international community keeps making that mistake the situation in the Gaza Strip will remain intractable. Council winner JoshuaPundit, on the other hand, has a proposal for how to get past that impasse.
