Overview And Map Of Israeli Ground Operation
Jameel is getting a much-needed nap right now, but he gave me the heads up on this map, which I don't think I've seen on the blogosphere yet:

A few quick things:
(1) The goal in the north thus far is being described as rooting out rocket launchers. Hamas soldiers are deeply entrenched there and it's where the worst fighting is taking place:
IDF sources said that the goal was to conquer territory in northern Gaza, including rocket launch sites. Soldiers from the Armored Corps, Engineering Corps, and Paratroopers, Givati, Golani brigades were participating in the fighting, with at least four brigades' worth of troops inside the Gaza Strip. The sources said that a majority of the rockets fired into Beersheba and Ashdod were launched from the northern Gaza Strip. One of the major aims of the operation was also to deliver a serious blow to the Hamas military wing, which the IDF estimated had not been severely weakened under the air campaign.
(2) This is still a defensive operation. The current plan is ostensibly to stay out of Gaza City (although with tens of thousands of reservists I'm not sure how much longer that's supposed to be the plan):
The IDF would not enter Gaza City or the refugee camps, defense officials said, and it was likely that on Monday - when French President Nicolas Sarkozy arrives and the international pressure is expected to escalate - Israel would begin scaling back the operations... "This will be a lengthy operation and there will likely be casualties on our side," a senior defense official said. "But our mission is to defend the home front. The purpose is to destroy Hamas's infrastructure and impair its ability to fire rockets into Israel."
(3) You can see that the IDF is mainly operating in northern Gaza but that are troops heading toward the former Gush Katif region in the south. Hamas made a point of using the former settlements to train soldiers and brainwash children: because why would you want to use civilian infrastructure for civilian purposes when you can be venomous? So there are military targets there. Hamas also has smuggling tunnels throughout the entire south and the IDF has to ensure that they can't resupply their rockets over the course of the conflict: every missile Hamas fires at Israel has to be one less missile they have.
