The gunman captured in last month's Mumbai attacks had originally intended to seize hostages and outline demands in a series of dramatic calls to the media, according to his confession obtained Saturday by The Associated Press. Mohammed Ajmal Kasab said he and his partner, who massacred dozens of people in the city's main train station, had planned a rooftop standoff, but abandoned the plans because they couldn't find a suitable building, the statement to police says... He said the assault, which started Nov. 26, was initially set for Sept. 27, though he doesn't explain why it was delayed. The gunmen had been told by their handlers to carry out the attacks during rush hours when the station is teeming with commuters.

India's security services are desperately scrambling in the post-Mumbai environment. They've got scores of homegrown ethno-Islamist jihadists. Many of those terrorists are wealthy and well-educated - capable of becoming exactly the kind of technologically sophisticated moving targets that made the Mumbai massacre a multi-day saga. And from across the border they've got more cells made of the same bone-chilling fanatics.

Salafist terror groups have a new and effective tactic. And - gauging global reactions to the attack - they've certainly got no ideological reason not to embrace it. In the Arab world reactions often ranged from predictable silence to open cheering of "the Invasion of infidel Bombay." In Britain the attack was repeatedly either unblinkingly excused by mainstream Muslim organizations or openly celebrated by tolerated Muslim radicals. Even in the US many Muslims greeted the news either by refusing to condemn it or by celebrating it.

And of course the narrative of Muslim vulnerability quickly took hold across the Western media, no doubt confirming the jihadists' hopes that their "grievances" were getting through. There's even an incipient Palestinian-style occupation story being incubated.

So yeah it's overwhelmingly likely that India faces more Mumbai-style attacks. After all - for all the carnage that they did create - the terrorists still failed to blow out the hotels' foundations. Cold comfort when you consider that it took Al Qaeda multiple tries to knock down the WTC too.
