Israel's Machine Gun-Firing, Missile-Launching Robo-Snipers Coming Soon To A Border Near You

Online

More than a year after very visibly announcing that they'd really appreciate a decrease in cross-border Palestinian raids, Israel is putting their remote weapons stations online:

The Sentry Tech towers are basically remote weapons stations, stuck on stop of silos. "As suspected hostile targets are detected and within range of Sentry-Tech positions, the weapons are slewing toward the designated target," David Eshel describes over at Ares... the towers [are] designed to create 1500-meter deep "automated kill zones" along the Gaza border. "Each unit mounts a 7.62 or 0.5" machine gun, shielded from enemy fire and the elements by an environmentally protective bulletproof canopy," Eshel explains. "In addition to the use of direct fire machine guns, observers can also employ precision guided missiles, such as Spike LR optically guided missiles and Lahat laser guided weapons."

But what about the medium range rockets that have been raining down on Israeli schools and hospitals? Good question:

When the Israelis think of missile defense, they think of missile and rocket defense. If it flies and carries a warhead, Israel wants to kill it. That's where Iron Dome comes into play. Iron Dome is a 20-rocket battery plus radar-detection system designed to be deployed around urban centers. I think of that old arcade game Missile Command to visualize. If—and that's a big if—Iron Dome works, it'd render towns along Israel's northern and southern borders immune to Hamas and Hezzy rocket barrages. Of course that's the problem: no one knows if the thing works yet. And it'd take one radar + battery per urban center to guarantee effectiveness, which makes Iron Dome a pricey system of questionable reliability.

I like to highlight these things to give you a preview of what the UN will be condemning next.
