President Of Israel Vs. Archbishop of Canterbury On Modern Democratic Culture

Nation-building

Here's Israeli President Peres talking yesterday about the consequences of those depressing riots in Akko:

President Shimon Peres on arrived in Acre on Monday, after clashes between the city's Arab and Jewish populations raged for several days, to attend a Muslim-Jewish conference, during which he called for an end to violence, saying "though there are several religions in Israel, there is only one law and one police." Those in attendance discussed the recent events in the mixed Jewish-Arab city, located in northern Israel, and agreed that a joint statement condemning the violence must be issued by both the Jewish and Muslim representatives.

And here's the Archbishop of Canterbury a while back taking a somewhat more sophisticated approach to sharia law:

That whole "one law for everybody" thing is cute and all, but it's just so last century. Hitchens, among others, is not overly pleased: It is the principle of equality before the law that really counts. And just look at how casually this sheep-faced English cleric throws away the work of centuries of civilization: "[A]n approach to law which simply said 'there's one law for everybody and that's all there is to be said, and anything else that commands your loyalty or allegiance is completely irrelevant in the processes of the courts' - I think that's a bit of a danger."

This year three Israeli universities jumped into the top 115 globally. British universities, meanwhile, are canceling speakers in the face of violent Islamist protests. There are Noble Prize laureates who won't enter the UK because of virulent anti-Semitism. Could it be that democratic principles and intellectual fibre are not entirely unrelated?
