UNSC Brushes Aside Ahmadinejad's Genocidal Rant, Focuses On What's Important (Plus: Of Course Obama-Linked Fundraisers And Liberal Christian Groups Welcomed Ahmadinejad)

Genocidal Lunatic

Rice thinks that they should be meeting about how Iran just threatened to commit genocide and wipe out a UN member state. But the UN's foreign policy experts and diplomats are committed to focusing on what really matters. Israel settlements:

On Friday, the U.N. Security Council will hold an open debate at the ministerial level on the ongoing Israeli settlement building in disputed territory. Saudi Arabia requested the debate to coincide with the General Assembly, which has brought a host of world leaders to New York. Public speeches are expected from Saudi Arabia and the Arab League, and probably Israel speaking in response, but no council resolution on the matter is expected. Continued Israeli settlement construction and Israeli security concerns have clouded Middle East peace negotiations. Both Palestinians and Israelis have expressed doubt about achieving an accord before Bush leaves office.

The UN should just go the whole way and grant Iran's request for a Security Council seat. They've already got a less subtle version of Hitler proclaiming his intention to commit genocide from the floor of the General Assembly. Some choice excerpts, plus the reception that this cretin got from various liberal organizations and institutions, after the jump.

It seems that the Iranian president is now licensed to blame "Zionists" for everything from the economic crisis to "the whole world order," to threaten Israel's existence and to use words like "cesspool" to describe its people. There was a deafening silence in Britain... Some have compared Mr. Ahmadinejad's language to that of the Nuremberg rallies. That is not entirely accurate. It actually reminded me of Heinrich Himmler's notorious speech at Posen in October 1943, in which he explained why the Nazis wanted to exterminate even Jewish children, to "make this people disappear off the face of the Earth," so that future generations of Jews could never avenge their parents. Like Himmler, Mr. Ahmadinejad claims that his own people — and Muslims more generally — are threatened by "Zionists," exploiting the paranoia of the Islamic world to justify turning Iran into a single gigantic nuclear suicide bomb. But if there is little difference between Mr. Ahmadinejad's murderous intentions and those of Hitler and Himmler, there is a considerable difference in the openness with which he talks about them. Himmler's speech — one of several occasions when the S.S. leader was frank about the aim of annihilating the entire Jewish people — was given to an invited audience of party bosses, including Joseph Goebbels and Albert Speer.

In fairness, Ahmadinejad occasionally gets some odd looks and cold shoulders from other UN members. Some liberal US Christian groups have the exact opposite approach, while liberal US media outlets repeated their annual ritual of credulous fascination with this cretin:

On Tuesday, Ahmadinejad did his best to weaken the opposition still further, via an interview with America's prestigious National Public Radio: He insisted that he is not seeking a confrontation with the United States or anyone else, and that the entire problem is "the U.S. administration and its group of friends."... "Let's ask ourselves, where exactly did the Zionist regime come from?" he continued. "Palestine has existed historically with people who live there for thousands of years."

That, for those of you who don't know, is utter bullshit. Maybe Obama can give him a history lesson when they meet. The gettogether shouldn't be hard to organize: worst case, they can just have Obama's Finance Chair plan it. He's got some experience in that area.
