Professor Publishes Most Perfect 9/10 Liberal Self-Caricature Evuh

One of our graduate student listservs served up this elegant example of liberal "I can't hear you" pre-9/11 wishful thinking. This is the opening paragraph of an open "Letter to the Presidents-in-Waiting". It was written by Saul Landau - academic emeritus at a California state university, natch - and as near as we can tell it was in no way meant to be ironic:
I request that as your first act in office you end the "War on Terror." Such action, I submit, would make most Americans feel more secure. Millions of us are sick of the word "terror," of feeling terrified. Terror means fear; fear precludes hope and confidence. You advocate hope and change. "Yes, we can." To do things (change), we need to be freed from White House panic harangue. Last December’s CNN poll reported 40 per cent of the public still worried about themselves or family members becoming terrorist victims.
Well then. Glad we got that out of the way.
This was published in all seriousness with moral indignation and steadfast righteousness. Yes, really.
