Later they joined the PLO as the second-largest party, but scaled back their participation because Fatah didn't seem to wipe out Israel enough. Regarding contemporary Palestinian society, nothing really says "we're ready for peace" like handwringing panegyrics for intransigent arch-terrorists:

Thousands of Palestinians marched Monday in memory of George Habash, the legendary founder of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine terror organization, who was buried in Amman. The marchers in the west Bank city of Ramallah wore red scarves, symbol of the PFLP, chanting, "Your era is the era of Palestinian struggle." George Habash founded the PFLP in 1951 with the explicit goal of modernizing Arab culture enough to wipe out Israel. Which makes people who say that Palestinian terrorism is a response to Israel's 1967 occupation of the Gaza Strip and the West Bank - like the Ahmadinejad embracing foreign policy experts at the Council on Foreign Relations - pretty fucking stupid.
