Because what better way to deal with self-esteem issues than to voluntarily make yourself a second-class human being? It would be "a mark of respect" for the groom and his family, you see:

We declare this story false. Not the part about how she'd be expected to voluntarily debase herself as a sign of respect to her overlord husband and his... pious... family. That's obviously on the up and up. It's just that Adnan doesn't seem like the kind of guy who can credibly sell "ok Britney dear, now it's really important for both of us to act modestly like God wants us to." Then again, she's clinically psychotic so what do we know?
