From what liberal sophisticates tell us, this has nothing to do with Islam. It's just a cultural practice. Except for the part where according to top Islamic authorities it has everything to do with Islam:

A top Muslim cleric in Iran, Hojatolislam Gholam Reza Hassani said on Wednesday that women in Iran who do not wear the hijab or Muslim headscarf, should die... "I do not understand how these women who do not respect the hijab, 28 years after the birth of the Islamic Republic, are still alive," he said. "These women and their husbands and their fathers must die," said Hassani, who is the representative of the Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei in eastern Azerbaijan.

Well that kind of sucks. We wonder if this is the same guy who makes mistakes about how jihad is just an inner struggle of self-overcoming. Top Islamic are making those kinds of mistakes all the time.
