Last week: US suggests unprecedented military aid and coordination with Lebanon. This week: Lebanon breaks the Lebanon II ceasefire and shoots at IAF planes doing an overflight:

Lebanese troops opened fire Thursday on Israel Air Force warplanes flying low over southern Lebanon, but no hits were reported, Lebanese officials said. Lebanese soldiers opened up with machine guns and light anti-aircraft weapons mounted on armored vehicles at two planes that flew by just east of Marjayoun near the border at midmorning, a Lebanese security official said. A total of 150 rounds were fired, he added. A senior Lebanese military officer also said the army confronted the Israeli planes, but gave no details... It was the first time Lebanese troops had opened fire on Israeli aircraft since an August 14, 2006 cease-fire ended a month-long war between Israel and Hezbollah guerrillas.

Maybe the Lebanese had the right to take potshots at IAF planes, which were after all violating Lebanese airspace. We think that Lebanon shouldn't get to complain about anything until they stop Hezbollah from threatening to launch another war from Lebanese territory. But as a juridical matter, yeah - Israel can't exactly register a formal complaint.

The broader point is how insanely schizophrenic US policy has become. Supplying weak regimes was stupid enough when the only risk was that fanatics would keep the security assistance when they overthrew the regimes. But now it's actually being used against Israel by the same people that the US is supplying. Unlike liberal conspiracy theorists, though, we don't think that the US is intentionally trying to stir up wars to the military industrial complex can profit by selling weapons to all sides. We just think that the US's Middle East policy is being run by rank incompetents.
