Wednesday Fred Update - Fred Thompson Closing In Florida, Jeri Thompson Still A "Trophy Wife"
Rudy Giuliani leads the Republican Presidential Primary in Florida with 29% support in the latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey. Fred Thompson is in second place earning 23% of the vote. A month ago, Giuliani had a thirteen-point advantage over Thompson, 30% to 17%. Two months ago, Giuliani and Thompson were virtually tied for the lead in Florida. Mitt Romney has lost ground in the Sunshine State over the past month. He currently attracts support from 11% of Likely Primary Voters, down from 15% in August. John McCain has moved in the opposite direction and is now supported by 12%, a gain of five points since our last survey.
Here's a question that no one thought we'd be asking in September: is there a chance that Mitt Romney will drop out before John McCain? Or is Florida different because it has a large Hispanic immigrant community? That shouldn't make a difference though, because the Cuban community very explicitly differs from other left-leaning Hispanic communities.
In other news, Spartanburg County GOP Chairman Rick Beltram seems like a nice enough guy. A very, very stupid nice enough guy:
Last week, bloggers had a field day when Beltram referred to Jeri Thompson, wife of former U.S. Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee, as a "trophy wife" three times during a speech to Spartanburg Republicans. Beltram, who sat next to Thompson when her husband came to Greenville the week before, later said he was trying to compliment her, but it came out wrong.
Maybe a public speaking class or two is in order before he ever says words in public again?
