US To Hamas Arms Trasnfer Watch - Abbas Support Low

Let us be very clear in telling you what you already know: the weapons that the US is sending to Abbas today are going to end up in Hamas's hands within a couple of years. Fatah is corrupt and unpopular and Abbas doesn't have the Arafat-esque thuggish charisma to hold it all together. Anecdotal evidence on these points is cheap and plentiful, and - more so - numbers don't lie:

Thursday's midday march [in support of Abbas] failed to attract large numbers of Palestinians. "What are they celebrating, their defeat in the Gaza Strip?" asked Hisham Atiyeh, a 29-year-old shopkeeper. "The people here don't like Fatah because they are corrupt and because they have many thugs on the street... if elections were held tomorrow morning in the West Bank, Hamas would win. I'm not a religious person, but I will certainly vote for Hamas because I don't like what these Fatah guys are doing."... Fatah does not need money and weapons. It needs reforms and change."

We're not sure that this man-on-the-street's electoral judgment is particularly sound, but there is something disconcerting about only being able to get 150 supporters to march in an area that you ostensibly control under the rule of an emergency government. But if it is sound, then that's yet another reason not to give Abbas cutting edge weaponry - unless he's willing to use those weapons on ballot boxes, they're not going to do him much good against a Hamas takeover.
