Mere Rhetoric: Military Expert Ze'ev Schiff Laid To Rest (Updated: Check Out The Spine)

Original: Though Schiff was the Defense Editor for one of Israel's left-wing bastions, he was respected and admired across the ideological spectrum (Soccer Dad: "one of Israel's best, if not the best, military correspondent", Solomonia: "hard-hitting", etc). Ha'aretz has a writeup of his life and death:

Remembering him Tuesday night, former defense minister Moshe Arens said: "Not on the right or the left, because he was above political disputes, objective as only he knew how to be. Nor among the many writers and analysts and the Israeli press. As professional and sharp-eyed as they come, he was superior to them all. His articles were read by statesmen and politicians, generals and reservists, and they knew that he wrote the stark truth and how to listen to his views."

. At a time when Israel faces multiple wars and a 24-7 media that often tends to spin partial information into misinformation, his ability to convey both precise details and broad implications will be especially missed.

Update (11:00 PST): Soccer Dad David Gerstman reminds us to keep an eye on The Spine, where Marty Peretz will almost certainly be writing about Ze'ev.
