Decades Of Internationally Sanctioned Vicious Resentment Have Turned Inward
Honestly, what did you expect from two decades - at least two decades - of patting the Palestinians on the head and telling them it's not their fault? Here's a story that has not gotten nearly the attention it deserves, because it tells us nothing about where we're going. But it tells us everything about how we got here:
At the end of last week, this made perfect sense - why not "take a chance" on funding Hamas? Worst case, some more Israelis will die, right?
This is a perfect epitome of the last two decades of excusing any Palestinian intransigence. Of constantly drawing lines in the sand that the Palestinians willfully crossed to no permanent consequence. Of ignoring how generation after generation was being nursed on vague, sometimes anti-Semitic, sometimes anti-Western, always vicious hatred (blame MEMRI! It's their fault for telling us!) Of going into contortions to justify the most loathsome Palestinian barbarity. Just last month a nine-months pregnant mother of eight was captured trying to become a suicide bomber. Not only is that the kind of pathological society we're talking about - but had she and her friend succeeded, a full ninety percent of the world would have tsk tsk'd about the Occupation:
Pathological resentment can't stay bottled up. It explodes in symptomatic outbursts of mass violence. Denied the ability to take out their vicious hatred on innocent Israelis, seething with decades of of self-pity - of course the Palestinians turned inward. That's what resentment is, that's what it does.
If just one time in the international community would have said "enough is enough" to the Palestinians - if instead tripling foreign aid given to Palestinian society they would have said "you elected Hamas, you're on your own" - maybe this could have been averted. But instead the Palestinians were always patted on the head, always told it was someone else's fault, and always promised that more would be done to help them - because their resentful grievances, expressed in the most barbaric terms, were "just". And now, after decades of being treated like errant children no matter how severely they misbehaved, they're throwing the ultimate temper tantrum.
