ZOA Advocacy Mission To DC Set For June 19
Of all the Jewish campus organizations who are supposed to be monitoring this stuff, it's the ZOA that has really thrown its weight behind students drowning in openly anti-Semitic campuses. They were literally years ahead of Hillel in countering the vicious anti-Semitism on the UC Irvine campus, suing the campus for anti-Jewish discrimination. At that time, Hillel was still bleating pathetically about therapeutic inter-religious dialogue. It also sounds like there are some speakers looking to tell people something new that they might not know. Press release:
* Advocate for Israel on Capitol Hill.
* Meet with high ranking government officials and members of Congress.
* Hear from prominent guest speakers, including Israel's new Ambassador to the US, Sallai Meridor; Yigal Carmon, the president and founder of MEMRI (Middle East Media Research Institute); and David Wilder, spokesman of the Jewish community of Hebron.
New York City residents may make reservations to travel to Washington by bus. Buses will leave on the morning of Tuesday, June 19, and return the next evening. Students participants are especially welcome -- although people of all ages are encouraged to attend. Busing from NYC is free for students, and the registration fee for students is only $36. The regular
registration fee is $170.
Student registration is here, otherwise call the ZOA at 212-481-1500. You can also email Dalia Lockspeiser.
Anyone who has the time - and who genuinely wants to know what's going on in and with the Middle East - should strongly consider going. We've always been kind of skeptical about just how much work is done at these kinds of things. They always strike us as having a little too much 1970s style "standing in solidarity", with the inevitable result being that the same representatives of the same campus groups kept hearing, saying, and resolving to do the same things. But the speakers at this thing seem pretty interesting, and it's the ZOA so naivety is undoubtedly going to be kept to a minimum.
