Netanyahu Launches Campaign to Oust Olmert. He'd Better Act Fast.
And we suspect that there will be much rejoicing in the jblogosphere:
This has been a long time coming, and not entirely because of the Olmert government's failures. Netanyahu does not have an indefinite window to translate public disillusionment with Olmert into a return to the Prime Minister's Office. Relatively soon Ami Ayalon will take over the Labor party, depriving Netanyahu of his status as The Only Guy Running Who Isn't A Deluded Peacenik (tm). But if the government is toppled in the near term, the Labor primary race will drag the party down for a couple of months. This will be in sharp contrast to a Netanyahu-dominated Likud, which will present a disciplined, united, newly serious public image.
People also need to start talking about what a post-Olmert Kadima will look like - there are a lot of very good political minds, to say nothing of powerful politicians, left in the ranks. If the public can be convinced that failure was Olmert and Peretz's fault, Kadima could be rehabilitated under new leadership.
Don't forget the overarching dynamic of a race between Netanyahu and anyone who's credible: lots of people still dislike and distrust Netanyahu.
