Mere Rhetoric: UN Question Of The Day: Is Iran Smuggling Weapons To Hezbollah? Duh.

Well this is spectacularly stupid:

The United Nations Security Council will consider forming a special committee to review accusations that Syria and Iran are smuggling arms to Hezbollah through southern Lebanon. The possibility of forming committee was included in a statement by the Security Council president, U.K. Ambassador to the UN Sir Emyr Parry Jones. The statement was circulated among member states in preparation of a discussion on the matter tomorrow. The statement proposes forming a team of experts commissioned by Britain, France and the U.S., to examine whether weapons are indeed being smuggled to Lebanon, as Israel has repeatedly claimed.

Wow. A special committee of experts to look into the issue. What will they do? Will they look at aerial footage? Will they walk along the border? Will they leverage Western intel? Because, you know, it's really hard to figure out whether Iran and Syria are giving Hezbollah weapons. You have to try really hard and study for a long time.

Or you could just open a newspaper where Nasrallah boasts about how Iran and Syria are giving him weapons:

Hezbollah head Hassan Nasrallah has said it is no secret that Iran is aiding Hezbollah by sending money and weapons via Syria. In remarks published in an interview in the weekend issue of the Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Rai Al-Aam... Why is this news? Because, you see - during Lebanon II, the Guardian declared that "little is overt about the relationships between Hizbullah and the governments in Tehran".

Whatever. It'll take all 15 UNSC members to approve the committee, so it's not going to happen. Yes - even the suggestion that someone should believe Nasrallah when he says that Iran is giving him weapons can't get through the United Nations.
