Israeli Political Update - 2007-03-19 - This Government Can't Fall Too Soon
Prime Minister Olmert's government won't last through the summer. We're just hoping that they'll last long enough for us to get our papers done. Can we please make a deal with Israeli students? In the next election, don't be stupid. Vote for the best candidate, not the candidate who really seems like a nice guy when he's not breaking the knees of strikebreakers. Beseder?
* Opposition Leader Benjamin Netanyahu is denying reports that he's attempting to topple the government by wooing Kadima MKs back into the Likud fold. Which means that Benjamin Netanyahu is attempting to topple the government by wooing Kadima MKs back into the Likud fold. We love the quote:
In theory, however, he's in it up to his eyeballs.
* Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni is denying reports that she's getting ready to openly challenge Olmert for the Kadima leadership. Which means that Tzipi Livni is getting ready to openly challenge Olmert for the Kadima leadership. We love the quote on this one too:
Because when the most powerful Kadima Cabinet minister after Olmert declines to support him, that's nothing like opposing him. Except for the part where it's the exact same thing as opposing him. No wonder every Kadima member with vocal cords is talking about the post-Olmert era.
* Soon to be totally fired Labor leader Amir Peretz is gearing up for the coming electoral battles as well. He's desperately trying to leverage the Arab vote against his party rivals. Look out later today for our post about the current disposition of Israeli Arabs - the words you're looking for are "Holocaust deniers" and "Hezbollah supporters". So now Peretz has two natural constituencies: young Israelis trying to send a message to "The Establishment" by voting for an idiot and Israeli citizens of questionable ethics and patriotism. Outstanding.
