Slate's Negative Review of 300 Provides Countless Reasons To See The Movie
Back when Team America came out, we remember listening to a reviewer talking about how great the film was. There was only one thing that bothered him: it seemed like there were a couple of places in the movie where the creators slipped up and almost seemed to be - gasp - not totally against the Bush administration. Not that he thought they were actually in favor of the War on Terror - he was sure that they just slipped up.
The idea that Matt and Trey did that on purpose - that they actually meant to be pro-war - never even made it onto this reviewer's radar. It wasn't even a possibility - because no one sophisticated can actually have those positions. Now check out how adorable this Dana Stevens review of 300 is:
A movie that doesn't nod in the direction of antiwar sentiment? The horror of it! Because Hollywood's clumsy anti-war screeds always nod in the direction of advocates of the War on Terror, right?
In a way, we're kind of in favor of this kind of liberal, anti-war ideological myopia. If they recognized that there's a reasonable position other than their own, they might start actually thinking about answering it. And then where would we be?
You know who else doesn't think you should see 300? Meryl Youirsh. Which we have to admit is kind of brave - we certainly would never considering so bluntly crossing VDH
