Iran Now Blaming Sunni-Shia Split On Israel. No, Really.
The Sunni-Shia conflict began a couple hours after Mohammad's death, when his son-in-law (and first cousin) Ali was passed over in favor of Abu Bakr as the leader of the Islamic State. Fast forward a generation, to when the secular leader of the Islamic state besieges and kills a lot of Ali's children and relatives. Skip over some more details, and what you get is basically a millennium and a half of Muslims killing Muslims.
But that shouldn't stop Iran from blaming the Jews:
That's the Supreme Spiritual Leader right there, who presumably knows that what he's saying is not technically "true", in the sense of "having a relationship to reality resembling things that are accurate" (and he's the one supposed to be reigning in Ahmadinejad right now). But the pathology really does go that deep. They really believe that the world will be a utopian paradise just as soon as they wipe out Israel. And that, M. Chirac, is what's wrong with letting Iran having "one or perhaps a second bomb".
