US Government To Give Palestinian Terrorists Cutting-Edge Weapons

Of course the IDF objects to this enragingly idiotic idea:

An $86 million U.S. program to strengthen Abbas's presidential guard will include funding for four-wheel-drive vehicles, new uniforms and military training, diplomats briefed on the program said. "The IDF's objections in this case center on equipment, such as body armor, that is liable to wind up in the wrong hands and be used for terrorism," an Israeli security source said. A U.S. diplomat based in the region said the United States would ensure the equipment does not end up with Fatah militants. "It's going to be done in a way that's monitored," he said.

The infuriating thing is that everybody knows that the US is just going through the motions and mouthing the proper assurances. No one really believes that the US has either the will or the ability to keep the "good" Palestinian soldiers from giving their weapons to the "bad" Palestinian terrorists - or to prevent the "good" Palestinian soldiers from becoming "bad" Palestinian terrorists themselves, and keeping their US-made weaponry.

(1) Over the last decade and a half, US has demonstrated less than zero ability to keep track of the funds and weapons that they provide to Palestinians. If it was only that tons of weaponry were handed over to the most vicious terrorists by Arafat and his thugs at the beginning of Intifada II, then there might conceivably be a way in which we might try the same stupid idea with Abbas again. But a big part of the problem is that Arafat's people themselves became the terrorists (read: the Fatah "off-shoot "Al Aksa Brigades). What is the US going to do when another ten thousand Palestinian police officers decide to become terrorists? Nicely ask for their weapons back, and demand that these newly-minted terrorists forget their training?
At the risk of being trite, the definition of insanity is...

(2) The US can't keep its F-14 parts from getting sold to Iran. Forgive us a little bit of skepticism about their ability to keep three sets of untraceable body armor from being handed over a back fence at 1am in Ramallah. The disgusting thing about the smug little "it's going to be done in a way that's monitored" is that not even the US official believes this - but he expects Israel to act as if it's obviously absurd to suggest that he's so full of it that it's coming out of his ears.
