President Bush: "The advance of freedom is the cause of our time"
Of course he had to mention the Palestinian Territories - because he had to mention the Palestinian Territories - but there is very, very little to disagree with. The President steeled the country, he called out Iran and Syria, and he explained that the stakes are the very existence of Western civilization. We tuned in late, but unless there was something staggeringly stupid in the beginning then we're beginning to think about maybe feeling good about our 2004 vote.
He even articulated Sen. Lieberman's support as an example of bipartisanship - which will piss off exactly the right people.
Rhetorically, the speech sounded near pitch-perfect. He subtly painted his domestic opponents as pessimists, he struck the right ideological notes, and he did it all in the cause of unity and liberty.
And look... the Democrats have issued a statement immediately. Turns out, they're opposed.
