SCORE! Iran Blames the Jews for Benedict's Statement!
We've been asking for days how Muslims are going to blame Jews for the Pope's speech. OUTSTANDING!
Iranian hardline newspapers said there were signs of an Israeli-US plot behind remarks by Pope Benedict XVI that linked Islam to violence and created a wave of anger across the Muslim world. The daily Jomhuri Islami said Israel and the United States - the Islamic republic's two arch-enemies - could have dictated the comments to distract attention from the resistance of the Shiite militant group Hezbollah to Israel's offensive on Lebanon. "The reality is that if we do not consider Pope Benedict XVI to be ignorant of Islam, then his remarks against Islam are a dictat that the Zionists and the Americans have written (for him) and have submitted to him... The American and the Zionist aim is to undermine the glorious triumph of Islam's children of Lebanese Hezbollah, which annulled the undefeatable legend of the Israeli army and foiled the Satanic and colonialist American plot," it said.
We couldn't be more giddy. We totally had money on "distraction from the glorious triumph of Islam's children of Lebanese Hezbollah" in the betting pool.
Quick, someone get on the New York Times on the phone. We need some interfaith dialogue, STAT. Because all we have to do is explain to the Iranians how Jews, Christians, and Muslims all view Abraham as their historical patriarch. Here's what none of you understand - this conspiracy-theory anti-Semitism is just the result of a big misunderstanding. It's not pathological, it's not deep prejudice - it's just that Bush makes them think that Jews are bad.
UPDATE: Under no circumstances should you miss the real beauty of this statement. This total Iranian nutjob turns out to be like fifty times smarter than the loser that BBC had on yesterday. Let's compare. The Iranian guy (who presumably knows a lot about Islam) suggests that it's the Jews' fault since Pope Benedict is not ignorant about Islam. Now let's change stations over to the UK-taxpayer funded Beeb:
[It is] absolutely infuriating is watching people who have literally no idea what they're talk about be both absolutely wrong and self-importantly condescending: "There will still be concerns about whether to go ahead with the Pope's planned visit to Turkey in November, our correspondent says. The BBC's David Willey in Rome says Pope Benedict, a theologian who has led a sheltered life in the Vatican for more than two decades, may not have understood the potential implications of his remarks. He says the Cardinal Bertone, the newly-appointed top Vatican official, faces the task of serious damage control in the coming days."
Who ARE these people?
UPDATE 2: Do you think it bothers them at all that people laugh about how they're going to blame the Jews before they even do it? Even a little?
UPDATE 3: OK, here's what's going to happen. There are going to be a lot of attacks on a lot of Christians by Muslims in the next few days. There may even - God forbid - be a spectacular attack on the Vatican (cf. Muslims destroying things that they have never in 2,000 years gotten close to creating - they don't have a Michaelangelo, so why not destroy the Sisteen Chapel). When that happens, Iran (or maybe Egypt, we think they have some kind of rotation going) will suggest that Muslims were not responsible for the attack. Specfically, they'll say that 'what you have to ask yourself' is 'who benefits' from making Muslims look violent and 'in whose interest' is it to bring drive a wedge between the West and Islam. This is what they do every. single. time.
UPDATE 4: Read all the way through:
"There are many signs that show that Pope Benedict XVI's remarks regarding the great prophet of Islam are a link in a connected chain of a Zionist-American project," it said. "The project, which was created and executed by the Zionist minority, aims at creating confrontation between the followers of the two great divine religions."
It's art. It's just art. Human reason couldn't create something like this. It's positively inspired.
