Elie Wiesel Isn't Really That Naive
We don't believe that the de facto conscience of the world can really find this at all surprising:
The legal effort in which Mr. Wiesel is involved, established at the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs, includes a former Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, Dore Gold, and a former Israeli ambassador to America, Meir Rosenne. "It is hard to believe that at a time when the president of Iran is making statements denying the Holocaust and does not hide his intention to erase Israel from the map, the enlightened world is planning to host Ahmadinejad at the opening of the General Assembly instead of evicting his country from the U.N. altogether," the group said in a statement issued yesterday.
And actually, now that we think about it, we're sure that this statement is just playing dumb. There is no way, for instance, that Dore Gold finds it hard to believe that the UN is run by and for despots and tyrants (anti-Semitic anti-Zionist despots and tyrants, at that). For some reason, two separate people in the last month have volunteered to us in private conversation that Ambassador Gold's face literally falls and darkens whenever he gets asked about his years at the UN. The UN is a forum where thugs, warlords, and genocidal lunatics have somehow managed to get civilized countries to pretend that there are legitimate debates and proceedings being conducted. This sad theater would be funny if not for the real force that the GA's preordained resolutions have in mainstreaming the most absurd and virulent criticism of Israel - and if not for the real delays caused by the UNSC's dithering on Iranian nuclearization.
