More Americans Blame Bush than Clinton for What?
Not even the nutroots are this crazy:
The percentage of Americans who blame the Bush administration for the September 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington has risen from almost a third to almost half over the past four years, a CNN poll released Monday found.
Asked whether they blame the Bush administration for the attacks, 45 percent said either a "great deal" or a "moderate amount," up from 32 percent in a June 2002 CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll.
But the Clinton administration did not get off lightly either. The latest poll, conducted by Opinion Research Corporation for CNN, found that 41 percent of respondents blamed his administration a "great deal" or a "moderate amount" for the attacks.
The Clinton administration kicked the can of Islamofascism down the road for 8 years. The Bush administration was only eight months. In what world is the Bush administration more responsible? Equally or nearly as responsible, maybe. But more responsible?
People better informed than we are (a title you too can earn just by scrolling through Slate's 9/11 report picture book) will break this down over the course of the day, but these are the actual results. We checked out the poll results linked from the story and CNN is reporting this accurately. The spread is 23-19 on people who place "a great deal" of blame on Bush vs. Clinton. We hoped against hope that maybe it was like 1 percent vs. 20 percent in the "great deal" and 20 vs. 1 in the "moderate". But no.
UPDATE: Powerline thinks the framing on the story is bunk because these numbers are unchanged from the last time that this poll was taken - and links to a takedown at Riehl World View that demonstrates same. Fair enough, but, uh, doesn't that still mean that there's a large majority of people in this country who don't understand how things like "months" and "years" work? To say nothing of the 9/11 hijackers having made themselves comfortable in the US before Bush was sworn in? Earlier we implied we can see a reasonable case for equal responsibility, but we're taking that back now (we also unequivocally take back the statement "not even the nutroots are this crazy", which we wrote before we saw the DKos conspiracy theorists at work this morning)... Anyway, earlier we said "maybe" on equal responsibility, but come on. Who are these people that believe that? How do they come to have these "ideas" of theirs?
