We're Shocked It Took the Left This Long to Start With "Muslims Are The New Jews"
It seems that even people who aren't explicitly running the idiotic Muslims are the New Jews line are still running the idiotic Muslims are the New Jews argument:
Discrimination and harassment by law enforcement have come to plague American Muslims in the years since the terrorist attacks of September 11. There have been suspicious looks, slurs, physical attacks, extra screening at airports and arrests on groundless charges. And it seems to be getting worse... "I see that the United States is slipping into being a police state, at least to us Muslims," he said as he recounts incident after incident that have affected the members Dearborn's large Muslim and Arab communities.
Suspicious looks! That really is the slippery slope to a police state.
This "Muslims are the new Jews" argument is actually kind of an old argument - we're really surprised it took the left this long to really play it up. Melanie Phillips refers to it as Holocaust inversion, with Muslims playing Jews and Jews playing Nazis. Which, in light of all the suspicious looks, may make some sense - at this rate, in like 120 years, a Jew might shoot up pregnant women at a Muslim community center. Except that won't happen, because Muslims are not the new Jews. No really, they're not.
Actually, this isn't really exactly fair to the AFP article. She didn't claim that Muslims were the new Jews, just that suspicious looks are a sign (among many, admittedly) of a coming police state. Still not the most rigorous social analysis, but nowhere near the DKos lunatics who actually are suggesting that Muslims face the same dangers in contemporary America that Jews faced in Nazi Germany.

The secretary-general of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu said Islamophobia, which has been fueled by the Sept. 11 attacks in the West, is similar to the anti-Semitism movement seen in 1930s. Ihsanoglu said, “I do not think the current situation is good for either the West or for the Islamic world. The two civilizations should cooperate because hostility against the West increases parallel to the rise of Islamophobia.” In an interview with Zaman, Ihsanoglu expressed his opinions on sending Turkish troops to Lebanon, the democratization of the Islamic world, the reform in Islam and Iran’s nuclear program.
Personally, we think that whatever they mean by Islamophobia is probably the result of the manifestations of hostility toward the West (like bombings and stuff), but whatever. We just can't believe people actually think that this is at all comparable to Nazi Germany. At all. There's just no way. These people aren't stupid. They can count. There's no way they believe this.
So MR poll of the day. Is this evidence of:
(1) a victim complex so pathological and pathetic that people believe this
(2) a diabolical plot to reduce anti-Semitsim to "suspicious looks"
(3) a diabolical plot to mess with rightist bloggers
