Weekend News Roundup - 2006-09-02
The only comfort we can give you is that it's a holiday weekend, so drinking at 10am is technically allowed. It's a rule, you can look it up. Weekend roundup:
* Europe will not support sanctions against Iran. They're holding out hope that negotiations might work.
* Since Iran is going to get nukes anyway, really, what's the point:
* Israel will allow Indonesian troops to make up part of the increased UNIFIL force. Up until now, we've been thinking that this was a bad idea to trust the armed forces of counties diplomatically committed to Israel's non-existence to protect Israel. All kinds of reasons come to mind:
... we don't really trust the randomly selected, presumably more-ideological-than-average citizen of a country where more than half of the people believe the Mossad was responsible for 9/11 to be careful in filling out field reports about which side shot across the border first
... there might be 10 or 12 soldiers out of the 1,000 so committed that they'd let Hezbollah borrow a jeep
... and, oh yeah, they don't recognize Israel's existence
But you know what, we're going to reverse ourselves. In fact, we want the UN to go further: change all of UNIFIL so that there are only soldiers from countries that have no diplomatic relations with Israel. Because really, it's not like Hezbollah cares what country their human shields come from. At least this way there won't be much diplomatic fallout when the peacekeepers get caught in the crossfire.
* Europe is giving money to the Palestinians who are suffering because, through no fault of their own, Hamas took over their government. Or was elected. Whatever.
* Palestinians launch rockets into Israel. Israel will not retaliate, because... well, nevermind. Suffice to say Israel will not retaliate.
* Egypt's Foreign Minister is getting a little lippy:

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan said Friday that Syria would step up border patrols and work with the Lebanese army to stop the flow of weapons to Hizbullah. Syria will increase its own patrols along the Lebanon-Syria border, and establish joint patrols with the Lebanese army "when possible," Annan said after meeting with Syrian President Bashar Assad in Damascus.Yeah, so that's the plan apparently.

Egypt's Foreign Minister Ahmad Abdul-Rite criticized Israel's offensive against Lebanon in a televised interview on Friday evening. "We warned Israel that we were against war in Lebanon, and that an offensive would affect Egyptian-Israeli relations," Abdul-Rite said. "We were well aware of the mass amounts of wounded and the magnitude of damages caused. We were also aware of Israeli stupidity and Hizbullah's mistakes," the foreign minister added. You know what else hurts Egyptian-Israeli relations? When their stupid anti-Semitism prevents Israeli ambulances from rescuing crash victims because it hurts their eyes to look at Stars of David painted on the sides of cars. And what's this guy doing on TV anyway? Shouldn't he be out in the Sinai, helping security forces find those five Al Qaeda members that might be leaving explosive-packed laptops everywhere? Smug little...
