Ah, the State Department
When we say that US support for Israel is fickle, this is what we're talking about:
Asked for the US government's reaction to Israel getting "a little more active," State Department Spokesman Sean McCormack repeated what he told reporters earlier in the week: Israel must act with restraint and consider the effects of its actions on American efforts to birth a Palestinian Arab state. "We have always maintained that Israel has a right to defend itself, but we have urged the Israeli government to be mindful of the consequences of its actions on what all share as the ultimate goal - moving down the road towards two states," McCormack said.
One, it has yet to be demonstrated that the Palestinians want two states rather than a single Arab state from the Jordan river to the Mediterranean. Two, it has yet to be demonstrated that the international community is ready to accept an Israeli state. Three, even if one and two weren't true, it would still be a pretty bad idea to let Islamic fundamentalists fire missiles and rockets over an international border, right into the homes of Israeli citizens.
