Cindy Sheehan's New Strategy: Exhibitionism and Neo-Confederate Conferences
In her desperate and increasingly pathetic attempts to get attention, Cindy Sheehan has gone from spouting anti-Semitism to spouting nonsense about "occupied New Orleans" and throwing temper tantrums about Hurricanes that eat up her news cycle. Eventually, ridiculous moral exhibitions gives way to kind of creepy actual exhibitionism:
When I got arrested and the officers lifted me out I was afraid that America would see my underwear and that tickled me.
But as mainstream and even leftwing America grows increasingly weary of her strained and hysterical rants, she has had to seek out new audiences. Old friends - DailyKos regulars. New friends - the anti-war far right:
'Gold, Freedom, and War'
A Benefit Conference for LewRockwell.com
...
People still talk about past LRC conferences, but this will be the best ever. Here's just a sampling of some of the ground we will cover:
...
* The warmongering schemes for perpetual war for perpetual statism.
* The Camp Casey revolution and the tipping point for peace.
* Has the regime been fatally wounded?
* The real reasons the neocons hate LRC.
* How hurricanes and the "War on Terror" embolden the US police state
...
SPEAKERS (and there are more to come)
...
* Cindy Sheehan
Gold Star Mothers for Peace
LewRockwell.com is a strange place, populated by neo-Nazis and anti-homosexual bigots, where "neo-conservatives" have taken over the US government (psst... they mean Jews) and the wrong side won the Civil War. And although it might not seem like the place for a nice progressive activist to you, Cindy Sheehan has an instinct for knowing where she's wanted:
Columnist Sam Francis [a LewRockwell.com writer] has recently lashed out at William F. Buckley Jr. in a futile attempt to save "paleo-conservatism" from achieving the reputation it deserves. Upset that the Old Right is increasingly lumped in with the New Left and the Islamist movement, Francis claimed that no responsible conservative could make that connection. He could not be more wrong...
Lew Rockwell admitted, in tones strikingly reminiscent of the contemporary Left, "I have this in common with NPR, Michael Moore, [and] the Black Caucus: a burning desire to see George Bush's fingers pried loose from the levers of power."... Rockwell’s site and the related Mises Review (both projects of the Ludwig Von Mises Institute of Auburn, Alabama) have written articles addressing concerns ranging from neo-Confederatism to berating "King" Lincoln.
That there are links between the Old Right and the New Left is not revelatory. But while that alliance is odious, it could at least be justified as a somewhat unseemly but tactically sound anti-war coalition. Cindy Sheehan, on the other hand, regularly presents herself as a pole around which progressive causes can rally - until that doesn't get her the attention she wants, at which point she'll talk to anyone who'll pretend to listen.
