Hey UN, Shove It
Prime Minister Sharon has raised the specter of civil war in the country he helped to create and has come within 100 votes of ending his political career in the party he founded - all to give the Palestinians some of their own territory. So of course the United Nations is calling on Israel to give up on independent Palestinian and Jewish states:
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon may finally have come around to the idea of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but the UN's special rapporteur on Palestinian rights is now talking about a binational solution.
"The construction of the wall [security fence], the expansion of settlements and the de-Palestinization of Jerusalem are incompatible with the two-state solution," wrote John Dugard, the UN's special rapporteur on the situation of Human Rights in the territories occupied by Israel since 1967.
John Dugard is technically the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in the Palestinian territories, so his job is legally circumscribed to criticizing Israel for any action against the Palestinians - up to and especially self-defense. So at least he’s doing his job.
