Wonder How This'll Go
If the US liked Sharon's statement that he won't let Hamas run in Palestinian elections (which they very much did not - apparently the idea of Hamas Ambassadors to the UN seems appropriate to the Condoleeza Rice State Dept), then they're going to love Sharon's promise to link Ma'ale Adumim to Jerusalem:
Ma'ale Adumim will be connected to Jerusalem, and a solution will be found for the Palestinians so that Bethlehem will be linked to Ramallah, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said on the last day of a six-day trip to the US... Sharon said that the major settlement blocs, which he has pointedly never defined, "are going to be a part of Israel" and contiguous with Israel. At the same time, he said, "don't expect applause."
Of course, the State Department is going to be screaming bloody murder about this in the next couple of days. When that happens, it will formally be the policy of the State Department that they'd rather have Hamas than Israel in charge of the territory which 400,000 Israelis call home.
