Reasonable Liberals Discuss Israel
Kenneth Baer, senior advisor to the Lieberman for President campaign and later to the Kerry-Edwards campaign on a variety of policy issues, has a question: "Is the UN anti-Israel?". He then links to a New York Times story about the use of UN funds to print anti-Israel banners in the Gaza Strip. While we're a little more concerned that UN money is also being used to buy weapons and belts for suicide bombers, this is a start of sorts.
Despite our hope that we could turn this into a snarky "look how anti-Israel the Left is" post, most of the contributions to the comments section were actually quite reasonable - although there were a couple that insisted with absolute certainty that no Palestinians want to conquer anything but Gaza and the West Bank. This one was particularly intriguing:
There is also the common expression, "We killed 1000 Jews and we got Gaza, we'll kill 2000 and get the West Bank and kill 5000 for all of the land." This is common parlance nowadays in Gaza. That the UN would be a party to this is obviously an outrage. That some are more interested in rushing to the UN's defense, or implying that any critique of Israel is unacceptable (laughable, of course, if one reads a single paragraph from any Israeli paper) is even more disappointing.
UPDATE: Not that you needed to be told, but people on the right are also pretty pissed off about this.
