US Hypocrisy Watch
We've been talking about the US's hypocritical pressure on Israel not to sell weapons to China since the crises first broke out. About a month ago, it seemed like Israel had made enough concessions to convince the State Department and the Pentagon to end this pseudo-scandal. Apparently not:
The Bush administration is refusing to cancel sanctions it placed against Israel, even though the Jewish State has cancelled its deal with China regarding maintenance of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. Nixing the China was done under intense US pressure and damaged Israel's military industry.
This damage to Israel's military industry occurred, of course, while the US was pushing advanced weapons on the Arab world like a peyote dealer looking to clear his inventory - in other words, while the US was insuring that Israel would be in the maximum possible danger. Well, as long as punishing and humiliating a besieged , embattled ally for trying to maintain a robust domestic arms industry is preventing Chinese military modernization, we guess it's worth it:
Most people recognize that a catch-all won’t stop PLA modernization. China can’t make advanced weaponry, but while it tries to build a modern defense industry, it can buy from Russia. It also gets military technology from Israel and it would like to add Europe to its suppliers (and some Europeans would love to sell).
Definitely working to stop Chinese military modernization.
