Arab Unity and American Diplomacy
Egyptians talk a great game about their Israeli Arab and Palestinian brethren whenever it suits them as a way to undermine Israel's security. But are they concerned enough not to threaten to lynch them in the streets after a bombing attack? Turns out, not so much:
Dozens of Israeli Arab families were stuck in a luxury hotel close to the bombed Ghazala Gardens Hotel here on Sunday night, with some of them saying they were too scared to leave for fear of running into trouble with the Egyptian authorities.
Members of some of the families explained to The Jerusalem Post that rumors are rife here that Israeli Arabs were responsible for the triple bombings in Sharm e-Sheikh on Saturday that killed some 90 people, and that they now fear leaving their hotel - the Baron Resort Hotel - either to go into the nearby town or to try and cross back into Israel...
But it has turned into a fortress for the Watads and others. "We don't dare leave the hotel," said Afaf Watad sitting on the bed of her room, surrounded by her children. "We're too scared."
One begins to suspect that Egyptians are not entirely genuine when they champion Israeli Arab and Palestinian causes. So let's give them control over Israel's border:
The United States is pressuring Israel to relinquish control over access to Gaza. This includes abandoning the Philadelphi Corridor [separating Egypt and the Gaza Strip], allowing a free port in Gaza and overland transit to the West Bank.
Sounds great - the Egyptians clearly have the best interests of the region in mind, and can be trusted to secure quiet and stability. Plus, they're so good at protecting the Sinai from terrorists - we're sure they'd easily be able to coordinate their nonexistent intelligence resources to use their nonexistent technology to locate and destroy the smuggling tunnels they're not interested in locating or destroying.
