They Really Do Just Make Things Up
Palestinian villagers tried to foment anti-Jewish sentiment and violence by blaming Jews for killing a Palestinian 12 year old. Turns out now even the Palestinians are admitting that the child was killed because of a "dispute between families living in the village." Open and shut case of lying villagers and the anti-Semitic lies they tell. Unless, that is, you're the Los Angeles Times and you like to write things that are technically true but totally misleading:
A 12-year-old Palestinian boy was stabbed to death outside the Palestinian-ruled city of Nablus in the West Bank. Some witnesses said the boy was ambushed by several Jewish settlers near his home at Qaryot village. But some Palestinian officials said he was killed in a clash between rival clans.
First, all the Palestinian officials who investigated this said that he was killed because of the clan rivalry. Second, this is not some he-said, she-said where the reporter isn't sure who to trust. One side is coming from an insular and barely modern community where tribal and clan norms govern life and the other is coming from an organization that at least has the pseudo-discipline of a well-trained gang. I'm not sure what's more pathetic - that we've found a group of people that is obviously less honest than Palestinian Authority police officers or that the Los Angeles Times isn't sure which one to believe.
