Los Angeles Times Moral Equivalence at Work
Most people try to use the same word when two things are the same and we try to use two different words when two things are different. Not so much at the Los Angeles Times. Take these two headlines, days apart:
Israeli Officials Remove Jewish Militants From Gaza
Israeli Teen Slain Amid Mounting Mideast Tensions - Palestinian militants claim responsibility for the ambush near a West Bank settlement, which wounds three other youths
Maybe LA Times writers who write on Israel don't have to pay attention to the Middle East, so they don't know that Palestinian militants regularly murder civilians and the people they're calling Israeli militants haven't really killed anyone. Or maybe they do know, but they intentionally want to equivocate between civilians and the murderers of civilians just because one side is Jewish and the other isn't. Across different writers - from Ellington to King - the LA Times has long been known as a main outlet of anti-Israel propaganda. For people claiming ignorance, that's pretty consistent ignorance. Of course, this entire problem could be solved if the LA Times was willing to call terrorists terrorists. But that just won't do.
