MereRhetoric - Ahead on the Muslim Hypocrisy Beat
That's right - we know you read MereRhetoric to get tomorrow's news today (or, more likely, you read MereRhetoric because you're a friend or family member, but the point is that you could be reading MereRhetoric to get tomorrow's news today). Yesterday, I complained about how Saudi Arabia has the nerve to call for Israel to be sanctioned by the IAEA while they themselves are circumventing the NPT. Today we have a new name for that double-standard: international law:
Board members of the U.N. atomic watchdog agency approved a deal Thursday that exempts Saudi Arabia from nuclear inspections, despite serious misgivings about the arrangement in an era of heightened proliferation fears. Although the Saudis resisted Western pressure to compromise and allow some form of monitoring, the board of the International Atomic Energy Agency had no choice but to allow it to sign on to the agreement.
I love the Arab approach to following treaty guidelines - it's the same way fish follow migrating caribo. (Hat tip: Stan, whose new diplomacy blog Bloggy Bottom I have been remiss in plugging).
