Unholy Alliances - European Style
David Horowitz has been devoting a lot of space in FrontPageMag to investigating and describing the links between progressives and radical Islamists in America. FrontPageMag has also had articles about the same kind of links in Europe. And it's undeniably important to highlight how the old voices of moderation and liberalism have risen into the hysterical shrieks of the anti-Bush, "neocons control the White House" crowd. But the alliance between the old Left and radical Islam is one in which a moribund ideology, lost after the collapse of the Soviet Union, has latched on to a new source of vitality - the far Left contributes little more than a fig leaf to otherwise unapologetic jihadists. That fig leaf is valuable and needs to be called out for what it is - but the alliance is not as dangerous as one that would see two movements who were both on the upswing merging resources.
According to Israeli President Katsav, that's exactly the kind of alliance being formed by radical Muslims and neo-Nazis:
President Moshe Katsav... warn[ed] German parliamentarians of a potential link between radical Islamic terrorists and neo-Nazis. "Let us not be surprised if one day terror organizations use neo-Nazis to carry out terrorist attacks," said Katsav, who is on a three-day trip to Germany to mark the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Israel and Germany.
Neo-Nazis, of course, famously oppose the oppression of ethnic Arabs in old mandate Palestine. So it makes sense why they would be welcomed by the Islamic fanatics living in the inner cities of Old Europe, and through extension by the bleeding hearts of the anti-war crowd. There's only so long that the left can credibly maintain that anti-Zionism is not anti-Semitism and that radical Muslims are fighting the good anti-colonialist fight. After a while, even being useful idiots is no longer an excuse, because no one is that stupid.
