Probably A Coincidence
This could just be a giant coincidence:
Controversial Dutch filmmaker and newspaper columnist Theo van Gogh, who made a film about violence against women in Islamic societies, was stabbed and shot dead in Amsterdam on Tuesday morning, police said.
Then again, it could not. I just read through the first 20 or so stories on Google News. All say that a suspect was arrested (they even have details of the shoot-out). None are giving any details about said suspect. Again, could be a giant coincidence - but I bet if he wasn't a militant Muslim, that'd definitely be included.
Other parts of this article are equally noncommital about who was trying to kill the film-maker making films criticizing radical Islam:
Van Gogh had also been working on a feature film about the 2002 murder of controversial anti-immigration populist Pim Fortuyn, which was due to make its premier in January with previews to be shown on the Internet next month.
Van Gogh received death threats after "Submission" was broadcast on Dutch national television earlier this year.
He made the film with Dutch politician Ayaan Hirsi Ali, a Somali refugee given Dutch citizenship after fleeing an arranged marriage 12 years ago. Hirsi Ali, who calls herself an ex-Muslim, has been under police protection since receiving death threats because of the film.
"Received death threats", "receiving death threats" - you'd almost think all those death threats were sending themselves out, instead of being sent out by... well, the article doesn't say who they're being sent out by. Maybe Quakers.
UPDATE: Yes, I know that the police aren’t releasing any details about the murderer. That’s where investigative journalists are supposed to investigate and get the public information. Again, I tend to believe that if this wasn’t an attempt by a fundamentalist Muslim to shut down criticism and free speech, every newspaper writing about this would be taking the opportunity to chastise those who would otherwise jump to conclusions.
