The Real Problem With Gibson's The Passion
It's not that it inspires churches to put up Jews killed Jesus signs. That was mostly just some loon - albeit a loon with a Church who talked his members into putting the sign up. And it's not that it causes couples to get in physical domestic disputes. Because that just confirms my initial inclination that the Mount of Olives scene was one of the weakest and least impacting parts of the movie.
No, the real problem with Passion is that for the next year and a half, we’re going to have to put up with this kind of schlock:
The astounding box-office success of "The Passion of the Christ" has Hollywood idea men breaking bread with Pentecostal fervor over the prospect of working the path Mel Gibson has trod.
Already, television has conjured biblical shows and plot lines in humble imitation of "The Christ." Movies are sure to follow...
They're doing lunch about doing religion, and asking each other whether typical cinematic fare... neglects the tastes of a large body of potential customers out there between the coasts.
With this on one side and Abe Foxman’s inevitable and insufferable moral exhibitionism on the other, it’s going to be a long entertainment season.
UPDATE: Dawn of the Dead has knocked Passion out of its #1 slot. I guess Americans were ready for a less violent, more family friendly movie.
