Sunday Cute – Particularly Ill-Advised Interspecies Encounters

A meerkat who doesn’t understand how size works:

This cheeky meerkat appeared to have offended a rather prim giraffe after wandering into its enclosure. The tiny mammal bounded into the giraffe’s pen, sparking the curiosity of the larger beast. The pair inspected one another solemnly, with the meerkat stretching out a little paw and appearing to give the giraffe a kiss… Alfonso said that something then seemed to irritate the giraffe and it started kicking out at the meerkat. He added: ‘All hell broke loose. ‘The giraffe seemed to be offended and started kicking in every direction and the other giraffes started running in every direction and jumping and kicking. ‘The meerkats seemed to enjoy the scene because they stayed for a while longer before going back to their compound.’

A zebra who has no problem doing dental work a female hippo, even though the aggressive and deadly mom had her baby in tow:

Visitors to the zoo where both animals live were amazed to see the zebra craning its neck into the mouth of the water-loving mammal. But their surprise increased when they realised the striped creature was cleaning the hippo’s teeth. The extraordinary spectacle was captured by Jill Sonsteby, a photographer, at Zurich Zoo, in Switzerland. The 34-year-old, from Jacksonville, Florida, USA, said: “The zebra was in the same enclosure as the hippo and its baby. The hippo opened its mouth and let the zebra in there to clean. They literally did that for the 20 of us zoo-goers for about 15 minutes.

And a kitten who’s endlessly fascinated by a really weird finned thing swimming a really big aquarium:

Like a cat peering into a goldfish bowl, Akaasha the tiger cub is transfixed by a dolphin staring back at her. Curiosity got the better of both Akaasha and Mavrick, a 14-month-old dolphin who’s probably more used to a crowd of human faces gazing into his glass tank at a Californian theme park. Staff were taking six-month-old Akaasha on her daily walk around the Six Flags Discovery Kingdom when she saw Mavrick, a 14-month-old Atlantic bottlenose dolphin.
