Watcher’s Council Results – Worn Out

Each week, in a contest for the week’s best post, each member of the Watchers Council nominates one of their own posts and a second from outside the Council for consideration by other council members. The results for this week are live as of a few hours ago, and both winners focused on the areas where sweeping civilizational weariness meet moronic statist policymaking. The upshot is that not only are we legislating away centuries of hard-won freedoms, but weren’t we’re doing so because of inexorable sociological pressure. Good times!

The winning Council post came from the Colossus of Rhodey, who wrote about the totalitarian undertone of Western inanity:

Europe and Canada have myriad laws that limit speech and expression. And yet, it was these very same countries that were loudest in their complaints against the Bush administration’s efforts in the War on Terror, clamoring for going beyond the actual text of things like the Geneva Conventions in their desire to “show” how “civilized” and “dedicated to the rule of law” they were… The Canadians and Euros go to lengths to criminalize voiced opinions — opinions that some may find offensive — yet at the same time demand that detained terrorists be given rights and privileges beyond that which have already been agreed to… For “progressives” the absolute certainty of the rightness of their beliefs and actions overrides all.

The Council runner-up was the post I submitted about the unblinking hypocrisy of liberal Tea Party histrionics, where I tried to catalog the precise number of defects you’d need to be a post-Bush Presidential press secretary saying “imagine just a few years ago had somebody walked around with images of Hitler.”

Meanwhile the winning and runner up non-Council posts came from The Doctor Is In and Volokh respectively. Excerpt: “The dark night of the soul strips away your props and annihilates all your pretensions; will there be anything left but ashes when the flames have died out?” Again, good times!

I have no idea why it’s in my to-blog folder, except maybe because it was made during the early 90′s when people acknowledged that that utopian liberal fantasizing – “we don’t have to accept cost/benefit tradeoffs” – was counterproductive. Nice to see we’ve gotten over that.
