You’d think with a name like “The Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People”, CEIRPP would be concerned with the rights of the Palestinian people. But they seem more interested in systematically demonizing Israel:
But perhaps the one single most damaging step the [UN] took to institutionalize its bias against the Jewish state came with the creation in 1975 of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People (CEIRPP). Unlike the Kurds, Roma, Copts, Uyghur, Tibetans, and others peoples’ who plead for international support, only the Palestinian Arabs have a permanent UN-funded body which does nothing but agitate on their behalf.
As part of a revolving door of injustice, each year the GA meets to “discuss” the “Question of Palestine” and each year it passes the recommendations of the CEIRPP. The biases of the committee have metastasized throughout the UN system owing to its ability to poison attitudes toward Israel from within. It is the CEIRPP which came up with the charade known as the “International Solidarity Day with the Palestinian People,” held annually on November 29, and which sponsors an array of meetings, seminars and conferences targeting Israel.
The committee – which convenes again today and tomorrow in Geneva – is comprised of Afghanistan, Belarus, Cuba, Cyprus, Guinea, Guyana, India, Indonesia, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Madagascar, Malaysia, Mali, Malta, Namibia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tunisia, Turkey and Ukraine.
I actually didn’t realize that Laos’s official name was the Lao People’s Democratic Republic. I only looked it up on the hunch that “Democratic Republic”s invariable turn out to be neither, though they do spend a lot of their time criticizing actual democracies. And wouldn’t you know it, not only are they a single-party communist state but here they are attacking Israel. As for Afghanistan: do they have to recuse themselves when the committee discusses the rights of Palestinian woman? What about Nigeria, when the committee takes up the cause of Palestinians who happen to be Christian?
It’s a real pity Jordan’s not on the Committee. It would be so perfect:
A grave injustice is being committed against the Palestinian people — perhaps among the greatest in their history. Thousands are being systematically robbed of their citizenship, made stateless once more by a hard-hearted government that pays lip service to peace and the two-state solution, but which seems determined to undermine both. Israel? No — the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, the monarchy that occupied the West Bank from 1948 to 1967 and which has long had an uneasy relationship with its Palestinian majority. Now, cynically claiming that it has the Palestinians’ best interests at heart, the regime of King Abdullah II has begun removing the citizenship of Palestinians with roots in the West Bank.
Does anyone get the sense that maybe – just maybe – “the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people” are being used as a pretext for attacking the Jewish ?
