Watchers Council Results – Obama’s Cairo Speech Might Have Been A Little Naive

Naive

This week’s top Council posts have been voted on, tabulated, and posted. Council members focused on Obama’s Cairo speech and Mideast policy, not exactly a shock given how prominently those themes were features in this week’s nominations.

The winning Council post was one of mine, about how the Cairo speech is a crystallization of an eight-point plan – kicked around for half a decade by the foreign policy left – for detonating the US-Israel alliance. The Council runner up was Wolf Howling’s extensive, multi-part dissection of the speech:

I held high hopes for President Obama and his speech from Cairo to the Muslim world. With his Islamic background, President Obama was uniquely positioned to effectively speak some hard truths to the Muslim world. He was uniquely qualified to use the bully pulpit to call for much needed reforms in Islam. And he was uniquely qualified to educate both the Islamic world and the rest of us on the reality at the heart of Muslim violence. My hope was that he would find a way to do those things without being insulting and while expressing an optimistic vision of what was possible.

That is not what President Obama did. He did not merely fail to accomplish what was needed in his speech, but in many ways, he damaged our interests. Indeed, for what good he did with his strong statement on our “unbreakable” bonds with Israel and his mention of women’s rights, his pronouncements and omissions on virtually all other critical issues can only serve to make matters worse.

The top non-Council entry was a NY Post article by Ralph Peters neatly summing up Obama’s Cairo themes: wonderful Arabs, American slavers, wicked Jews. The non-Council runner up was a VDH article about the naivety of utopianism. It turns out that the reason scholars keep running into the inevitability of human conflict – religion (Original Sin), political science (antagonism), psychoanalysis (lack) – is because there might be something about humans that makes conflict inevitable.
