Wherein Israel gets to play Sherilyn Fenn to Power’s Julian Sands:
If you trust Matry Peretz’ judgment, you’d not be one of those thinking Samantha Power is an enemy of Israel’s… Samantha is a friend, a good friend, in fact. She has uttered some phrases about Israel that I did not like and that I thought were erroneous… The fact is that she truly, truly loves Israel and the people of Israel. They appeal to both her ecstatic imagination and to her understanding of the gravity of the world. To her defiance and to her discipline. If anybody thinks she is an enemy of Israel or even less than that, not a true friend, that anybody needs to know that love and affection always require questions.
Just once I would like to see a liberal be a “true friend” to Israel in some way that doesn’t involve undermining the US-Israel relationship. Because when State Department public diplomacy envoys are sucking up to the Arab world, their pleas for friendship don’t seem to “always require questions.” I suppose that that’s because Arab countries are so much more progressive than Israel – and tend to be more steadfast allies.
The unblinking denial of pro-Obama Democratic partisans is getting a little surreal. Bob Wexler – who of course viciously lied for Obama during the election – is now claiming that “there is no doubt” that Obama and Netanyahu will “get along very well.” Because a Likud PM and a US President who fantasizes about destroying some mythical “pro-Likud approach to Israel” – instant camaraderie.
Still – score one for Wexler. “Obama and Bibi will be polite to each other” is nowhere near as stupid as “Samantha Power wants to invade Israel out of love.”
