So Libya sent a boat to break Israel’s half-hearted partial blockade of Gaza. And Israel naturally turned it around:
Libya condemned Israel on Monday for preventing a Libyan boat from breaking the blockade against the Gaza Strip, calling the IDF a “terrorist, Zionist army” for taking such action. In a statement released by the official Libyan news agency, the country said that Israel had sent two navy ships, a fighter jet, and a submarine to force the boat to turn around.
I’m pretty sure that the bit about the submarine is a fib. And viewed from the right angle, Israel is actually helping Palestinian civilians. The last group of exhibitionist tools who got into Gaza got a bunch of fishing boats confiscated. But now Gazans are threatening to stage a voluntary hunger strike to highlight how there’s no food available. Really. Again. And over the weekend Hamas targeted Israeli troops with explosives. Again.
Meanwhile our State Department has been engaging Libya while political dissidents languish in Qaddafi’s dungeons:
Libyan democratic dissidents suffer in… dungeons… their plight ignored by the State Department. After nearly five years of engagement with the United States, Gaddafi rules supreme in Libya and enjoys renewed legitimacy at home and abroad. The United States, which in 2006 removed Libya from its list of state sponsors of terrorism, has failed to push consistently for meaningful reform… Dissidents continue to disappear, and the death squads organized by Gaddafi’s Revolutionary Committees remain a terrorizing force within Libyan society.
But at least he’s on the side of the beatific Palestinian people! Because he’s a moralist.
